Association of People With Dwarfism - Kenya
On April 4, 2013, the Dwarf Athletic Association of America (DAAA) invited the Little People of Kenya (dwarfs) to participate in the World Dwarf Games that were held in Michigan, USA, between August 3 & 10th, 2013.
Six (6) individuals including: Aurelian Mwalukumbi (Likobe), Ruth Mueni, Joseph "Sonko" Maina, Margaret Wangechi, David "Daud" Mwangi and William Ndung'u came together and formed the "Little People Team" or the "Dwarf Team" in preparation for participation.
William and Ruth took up Table Tennis, while the rest took up field and track events like short and long races as well as javelin and shotput. This dwarf team underwent a grueling practice and exercise regime at both Nyayo National and City Stadiums for close to 3.5 months.
However, as fate would have it, lack of finances, lack of an association to represent them and their interests at the national level ensured the team did not travel. The idea of forming this association thus was born. At the Registrar of Societies, we could not register as "Little People of Kenya" and hence the name Association of People with Dwarfism was adopted and duly registered on August 7, 2013.
From the initial, original six members, only three sustained the effort successfully pushing the idea across Kenya and beyond now as the Association of People with Dwarfism. These are Margaret Wangechi, Joseph "Sonko" Maina and William Ndung'u. Later, Joakim M Mutua and Catherine M Kibe were incorporated to form the first national office.
From there, it has been a flood and a flocking to the Association. Two months from the date we were registered, we were already clocking 500 people. At present, those that have indicated interest through calls, emails, texts and other means stand at 807, with those fully registered, paid-up members standing at 300!
We have grown, and we grow everyday. We now have a national, very vocal voice! We are keeping it that way!
The Association is fully registered first with the Registrar of Societies and as an Association of people with disabilities by the National Council for Persons with Disabilities, the government agency in charge of all matters disability. At present, we are represented in every one of the 47 counties in Kenya, with regional coordinators in what used to be provinces, namely: Nairobi, Coast, Western, Eastern, Nyanza, Rift Valley, Central, and North Eastern. All chapters in the counties work with the national office in Nairobi to coordinate all programmes and activities.
Successful, prosperous and happy people.
The mission of the Association of People with Dwarfism is to advocate for, promote and cater for the interests of thrall people with dwarfism in Kenya.
The Association of People with Dwarfism seeks to support, advocate for and empower all Little People in Kenya to be all that they can be and more. We do this through nationwide awareness, media advocacy and paying attention to the needs of those with dwarfism across Kenya.
